Sophia is a Managing Attorney at NMILC, where she leads the asylum and detention team. Prior to joining NMILC, Sophia was a supervising attorney in New York City where she founded and managed a detention representation program, as well as trained and mentored pro bono attorneys in their representation of noncitizens before the immigration courts and agencies. Prior to this, Sophia was an attorney with the Southern Poverty Law Center, where she represented individuals in immigration detention in rural Georgia. She is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), serving on several local and national committees. She is a frequent speaker and lecturer on asylum law, detention representation, criminal-immigration law, movement lawyering, and more. Sophia is also actively involved in movements to abolish immigration detention, community organizing, and advocacy to pass legislation in support of immigrant communities. Sophia received her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School and graduated summa cum laude from Whittier College. She is admitted to practice law in the states of New York and New Jersey.
