10 Years of…SIJS

We are in the middle of a 10 day series on the history of NMILC as part of our 10-year anniversary celebration. Each day we will be sharing highlights from one of our organization’s programs . Check back tomorrow for the next installment in the series!

Special Immigrant Juvenile Status is a form of humanitarian-based immigration relief available for children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected by one or both parents.  This type of immigration relief can be life-changing for children.  The process ensures children have a safe caretaker, children can continue with and pursue higher education, and eventually results in Legal Permanent Residency.  The goal of the SIJS Team is to ensure every eligible child receives representation.

Watch the video below to see how you may lend your time and talents to these efforts as a SIJS pro bono attorney.

Our SIJS team works closely with pro bono attorneys to secure State Court Predicate Orders.  These Orders are the essential first-step in the SIJS process and ensure that the child has a safe care-taker, can continue with their education, and eventually attain Legal Permanent Residency.

If you are a New Mexico State licensed attorney, interested in engaging in pro bono work to empower New Mexico's immigrant youth, please contact our Director of Community Engagement, Quiana Salazar-King.
