A letter from our executive director

Dear Supporter,

I am so proud of our community and our staff.

In the midst of the current health crisis, our staff has stepped to provide advocacy and legal representation to the immigrant community. We know that the many structural issues presented by this public health crisis are exacerbated for immigrants because of decades of xenophobic and draconian laws. This is our opportunity to ensure that we are highlighting and pushing back against these unnecessary barriers.

For the past few months, our team has worked to connect our clients to rental assistance, to navigate the complex unemployment insurance system, to monitor access to COVID-19 testing for the immigrant community, and to inform our clients about new federal and local support programs. Because many of federal programs leave out undocumented individuals and mixed status families, we encourage you to support New Mexico Dream Teams’ Relief Fund. The Fund is established to provide financial support to families who are not covered by these federal stimulus and benefits programs.

Our team worked to highlight the devastating and impending public health crisis that immigrant prisons present to our state. It is important to note that detained individuals in these prisons are merely held for civil purposes and the deafening and inadequate measures to protect the health of these individuals by ICE is putting everyone at risk. We will continue to pressure our local elected officials and ICE to free every single individual in an immigrant prison.

Despite our need to stay home to keep others safe, this month our volunteers have shown us what community really means by continuing to support our work remotely. Head over to our Instagram or Facebook pages to see some familiar faces and learn about why they continue to volunteer from their homes.

Even though we are physically distant, we can continue to work together to advance equity and justice for all immigrants in New Mexico.

Thank you for your continued support.

Adelante,

Adriel Orozco, Esq.
Executive Director
