It’s National Volunteer Week! Pt. 3

As we near the end of National Volunteer Week we want to say thank you to each of you who have followed along with us. Each year, we take this week to celebrate the many volunteers who make our work possible. Without their hard work and dedication NMILC would not be able to accomplish all that we do. We are grateful for not only the skills they generously offer, but the enthusiasm that they bring to the work.

We asked our staff to nominate exceptional volunteers to highlight during this week. The list was long! The fifteen volunteers we chose are just a representation of some of the amazing folks we have volunteering at the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center. Throughout the week we will be posting about them on our social media pages but we’re giving our blog a sneak peek. This is our third (and final) post for National Volunteer Week. We often use our blog to spotlight exceptional volunteers though, so know that there will be additional posts in the future. But without further ado…

Kari Converse

Kari is a certified interpreter volunteer. She provides vital language access for clients who require translations of their legal documents or interpretation for evaluations/screenings required for their cases. We are so grateful to have her!

"I have been deeply grateful for the opportunities NMILC has offered me to help.  During the Trump years, I took special joy in working at the citizenship fairs and getting people beyond his clutches. Now, I have a new way to help, by interpreting for medical exams. NMILC is a tremendous force for good in our community and world, and I am grateful for the opportunities to contribute."

Sophia Corwell

Sophia is another awesome translation volunteer. Her interpretation skills are a huge asset to us, and enable us to serve more clients. We are proud to offer translation and interpretation services to our clients free of charge, and could not do so without volunteers like Sophia!

"I volunteer at NMILC to be part of a community that helps give a voice to those immigrants in search of legal help."

Dulce Victoria

Dulce Victoria is one of our Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JV) for 2020-2021. She works as a legal assistant with our SIJS program. We are so grateful for the dedicated JV’s who stay with us an entire year!

"I'm a daughter of immigrants and I have seen first hand the struggles that low income immigrants have to go through. I choose to be a Jesuit Volunteer at NMILC because I learned how the important work that NMILC does impacts the New Mexico community."

Dulce Ivonne Rivera

Dulce Ivonne is one of our Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JV) for 2020-2021. She works as a legal assistant with our DACA/Citizenship and asylum programs. We appreciate her attention to detail and dedication to serving the immigrant community!

"My mother and I became citizens in 2015 and as I reflect about the difficulties of navigating that process, I have come to realize that it was attorneys and advocates who were immigrants themselves that helped us through it. I think it's important to pay it forward. That's why I choose to do this work."

Once again, thank you to all of our incredible volunteers! This is part three of our National Volunteer Week posts. We hope you were able to catch all three parts, both here and on social media. Are these posts making you want to become an NMILC volunteer? Fill out an interest form today!
