Student Artist Spotlight: Lindsay Angulo
With our 2023 Design Contest underway, we felt it was the perfect time to shine the spotlight on past year’s winners. Our first interview is with Lindsay Angulo, last year’s First Place prize winner.
Lindsay is currently in 11th grade at Española Valley High School. We sent her some interview questions about being an up and coming artist and we are thrilled to share the with you today.
Tell us about your winning contest entry from 2022, where the theme was Self Portrait. What or who inspired you?
I decided to draw a self-portrait of myself throughout the years, this is including my younger selfs from 7th - 10th grade. I tried to show the environment around me in my everyday morning routine. I fact that I would always sit in a similar spot and look out the window on the way to school is what inspired me. I wanted to capture that moment and reflect on this pattern of mine.
How did it feel to be an art contest winner?
I remember receiving a paper in the mail with comments from the judges on what they had to say about my submission. I remember treasuring their words of appreciation and I think that was a nice little detail that showed they really cared for their community and young artist.
What are some of your goals for the future? How do you see yourself incorporating art into that it?
Well since I'm an upcoming senior, college applications are just around the corner. My biggest goal is to pursue a degree around art/film. Therefore, I plan to work on an art portfolio that helps showcase what I am capable of doing. Hopefully if all goes well, making that project will be a very memorable and fun experience.
Do you have any advice for other students?
My advice would be, if you like to create art, this includes any form of art. The biggest piece of advise is to practice nonstop. If you really do love creating something that means a lot, and has value to you, always strive for improvement. That's what being an artist is. It's experimenting new things, learning for the results, and use what you learned to make an even better outcome.
What is the best advice you've every received, and who gave it to you?
The best advice I've ever received was from my electricity teacher from middle school. He told me this advice from a time when I was barely beginning my crazy dream of becoming an artist. He would make us draw electrical circuits and other blueprints. I would get unmotivated because my drawing abilities weren't where I wanted them to be. I would get frustrated. After all, the outcome of spending my time on a drawing wasn't worth the effort. He saw this, then continued to talk to me and encourage me to pursue that crazy dream. He was the voice of hope I needed at that time; I truly believe if he didn't spend time out of his day to talk to me, I wouldn't have been the same eagerly motivated person at the start.
Thank you, Lindsay! We appreciate your time and we look forward to seeing you succeed as an artist. For information on the 2023 Design Contest, click here!
