Albuquerque, N.M. - For the last four years, our immigrant communities and allies have fought back against the numerous, consistent, xenophobic and racist immigration policies pushed forward by the Trump administration. While this change in the presidency brings new opportunities to change and repair a system designed to separate, incarcerate, and deport our immigrant and asylum seeking people, we must continue to hold the incoming Biden Administration accountable. President-elect Biden must work towards systemic and institutional changes that are rooted in social and racial equality, founded on human rights, and provide pathways to citizenship for our undocumented immigrant community and institute systems of accountability to uphold due process for those seeking protection from their home countries. It's time that federal immigration policy put an end to for-profit immigration detention, an end to family separation, and an end to the federal agencies that are designed to target and deport our immigrant and asylum-seeking communities.

Adriel Orozco, Executive Director of the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, said:

β€œThe election of President-elect Biden presents us with a moment of hope and opportunity to shape our immigration system to one based on human dignity and respect. However, we are all too aware that former-Vice President Biden under the Obama Administration oversaw the continued criminalization of our community, the proliferation of immigration prisons, and the deportation of 3 million undocumented immigrants. We continue to fight alongside our community to hold the incoming administration accountable. We look forward to fighting for universal representation for low-income immigrants facing deportation, expansions of protections for our undocumeted immigrant community, and for policies, at both the state and federal level, that honor and respect the contributions that countless immigrants have made to our society.β€œ
